Humans have very strong scent memory. Tell us about a smell that transports you.
It’s the smell of laundry detergent that takes me back by about 4 years. . .to that accursed apartment, the memory of which I’d rather not recall. Eleven floors above the ground, packed with arrogance, cruelty, falsehood, and the most irritating of it all: frivolity. Full of things that are no use to anyone. I spent a whole month there. The television playing the most useless disturbing stuff out there and the radio playing the same crazy tunes again and again and again. What’s worse is that the smallness of the house meant that there was no way you could avoid any shit unless you left the damn house. But, I didn’t have a job back then. I was 19, dependent, and foolish enough to have ended up there. It was four weeks of having no way to shield my self-respect from the incessant onslaught of another Pharaoh, four weeks of feeling lost and unsafe, but four weeks of knowing the world a whole lot better than I ever had.
